When we talk about code review, we often talk about quality. We want to find bugs, check tests, and keep our software safe. These things matter. But code review has another job: it helps engineers understand their codebase.
Every pull request changes the system a little. A reviewer can help the team see what changed, why it changed, and what else may be affected. This shared understanding helps us work on the code later and make better choices as the system grows.
AI can be wrong
AI can write useful code and read changes quickly. It can also make things up. It may suggest a function that does not exist, miss an important detail, or sound sure when it is wrong. That is why an engineer needs to check the code and the reasons behind a suggestion.
We wrote more about this in Why Human Review Still Matters. The main point is simple: AI can help with the work, but a person should understand and check the result.
We need a clear way to see changes
Long pull requests are hard to understand when all we see is a long list of changed files. Engineers need an efficient way to see the main parts of a change and how they connect.
Being efficient does not mean skipping review. It means making it easier to focus on the parts that need our attention. A clear summary, a useful reading order, and a map of related changes can help a reviewer understand the whole change before looking closely at the details.
A clear codebase helps AI help us
AI works with the code and context it can see. Clear names, simple structure, helpful tests, and steady patterns make that context easier to follow. This can help AI give more useful suggestions.
When a codebase is hard to follow, AI has less clear guidance. It can repeat confusing patterns or add code that does not fit. That can create more noise and more slop. AI cannot fix every problem in a codebase just by reading it.
This is our view: a good codebase can help AI shine. A messy codebase can make its weak spots bigger. Engineers still need to understand how the code is organized and how it is changing.
Rocky is about understanding together
Rocky Reviews is a community intent on understanding the changes happening in a codebase. We want AI to help people see the change more clearly, not make the review decision for them.
It is not just about code quality. It is also about understanding. When engineers know how their codebase is moving, they can maintain it with more care and make better decisions about what comes next.
